Our instructors are an important part of the success of our dojo.

Master Nathan Winkelmann

Having started shotokan karate at hsok in 1990 (at 8 years of age); mr. Winkelmann received his master rank (5th degree black belt) in August of 2015 and his 6th degree in 2024. As the owner and chief instructor of HSOK, Master Winkelmann can often be found overseeing the dojo's classes and creating new courses for our ninja warrior program. Winkelmann’s forward-thinking philosophy has directly lead to the creation of new outreach programs and classes. 

Sensei Andy Hyvl

Sensei Andy Hyvl, 4th degree black belt, has been a member of Huntsville School of Karate since 2000. mr. Hyvl originally entered HSOK due to the urging of his best friend, Master Nathan Winkelmann. Today, Sensei Hyvl runs the day-to-day operations at hsok- planning classes and teaching our students. He also serves as the lead instructor for HSOK’s alpha omega karate program and homeschool classes.

"by teaching the kids at huntsville school of karate, it gives me the opportunity to watch them grow; not only in their martial arts, but in their personal lives, knowing that i made a difference in their lives gives me the greatest satisfaction."

"Karate has molded me into the type of person who believes they can accomplish anything. Whether it be school, life, work, or athletics- because of the training i received and continue to use, i know that i can accomplish whatever i set my mind to."

"by teaching the students at hsok and alpha omega, it gives me an opportunity to pass on what I have learned throughout my years of martial arts training.  it makes me proud to  watch the students grow and better themselves in all aspects of their lives.  teaching and impacting the students, allows for me to help shape the community around us, as well as, make sure the traditional values I grew up with are still around and being taught to our youth."
